Beyond Predictions: Nostalgia, Mindfulness, and the Restless Mind

I got excited and when one of my cousin posted some of these pics in the Facebook. These are the photos of an old and fading astrology services offered in South India. The photos brought back nostalgia of my previous interactions of going to one of these gentleman to see how the Parrot comes out to pick up a card and if it flies away or goes back into the cage. Can't remember what was told to me but, I did manage to get it done for a very cheap price. So the typical setting of a Parrot Card reader is like this. A supposedly knowledgeable person will be sitting under a tree on a footpath or some shady area under a tree, near road side. The setup is simple with a mattress or bedsheet laid on the ground. The fortune teller will be sitting with a Parrot in a small cage with a deck of cards. So when someone goes to him and pay him the money, (not sure how much it is now. May be around few dollars) the astrologer will say some mantras or chants, lay the deck of cards and open the door of the cage and invite the esteemed Parrot/Parakeet to come and pick up a card. The birdie will come out walking cute and will pick up a card with its beak and go back into the cage, happily munching the fruit pieces in the small cage. Here comes the moment of truth. Because, you and I cannot understand the language of the Parrot, the person will look at the Card, just like the Tarot card and will give his reading for you which could be anything, good or bad. You might get promoted, win a lottery, or loose some money, someone may cheat you etc. And, if you are further interested, you will be given some remedies or prayers that need to be done usually for Mother Durga, which will cost some extra money because, it involves breaking hundred coconuts or something like that.Look.at the end of the day, its a profession and matter of faith. Good luck.

This brings us questions like why worry about past and future. And, how could a Parrot predict the future or past?. May be, he is less stressed than we are that he doesn't need to perform at work, pay mortgages, bills, taxes and fines.

I was reminded of a book that I read few years ago.
Man’s Search for Meaning is a 1946 book by Viktor Frankl chronicling his experiences as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps during World War II, where he explains that the way a prisoner imagined the future affected his longevity. The book intends to answer the question “How was everyday life in a concentration camp reflected in the mind of the average prisoner?”
Part One constitutes Frankl’s analysis of his experiences in the concentration camps, while Part Two introduces his ideas of meaning and his theory called logotherapy.
Frankl identifies three psychological reactions experienced by all inmates to one degree or another:

(1) shock during the initial admission phase to the camp,
(2) apathy after becoming accustomed to camp existence, in which the inmate values only that which helps himself and his friends survive, and
(3) reactions of depersonalization, moral deformity, bitterness, and disillusionment if he survives and is liberated.
Frankl concludes that the meaning of life is found in every moment of living; life never ceases to have meaning, even in suffering and death.
Frankl concludes from his experience that a prisoner’s psychological reactions are not solely the result of the conditions of his life, but also from the freedom of choice he always has even in severe suffering. The inner hold a prisoner has on his spiritual self relies on having a hope in the future, and that once a prisoner loses that hope, he is doomed.
Frankl also concludes that there are only two races of men, decent men and indecent. No society is free of either of them, and thus there were “decent” Nazi guards and “indecent” prisoners, most notably the kapo who would torture and abuse their fellow prisoners for personal gain. Anyway, this a great book and when you get a chance, you should read it(Man’s Search for Meaning). .Anyway, this book was considered as one of the most influential books and about 10 million copies. There are plenty of praises for this book, for the positivity but there are also some critics who didn't agree. You can decide after reading this book.

Mindfulness :-
One of the ahaa..points of Mindfulness is that there is no suffering in the present (generally). All the suffering comes from thinking about the past or worrying about the future happenings which many not happen. That is why it is so important to live, enjoy and accept the present moment. So what about all the lessons to be learnt from the past and planning for the future ?.
I guess, they are required but not at the cost of present. Time box, allocate some time to lessons learnt and planning and get on with life. Mindfulness says, catch that mind that keeps drifting from the present, unable to focus on the things that we are supposed to be doing, leading to Procrastination. Of course the biggest distractors we have in our life is the electronic gadgets like, the Mobile, iPad, laptops. Ever wonder, how many thought a average person has in a day. (Read that somewhere between 40 to 60 thousand only and out attention span?. About 20 to 30 sec ?)..

Bhagavad Gita:-
Interestingly this issue of crazy mind is petitioned by Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 6.5. He says to Lord Krishna “The mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Krishna, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind". And, Krishna acknowledges this and says in next verse, BG6.6 that “ O mighty-armed son of Kunti, it is undoubtedly very difficult to curb the restless mind, but it is possible by suitable practice and by detachment”. And, What is that practice? is what is explained in Bhagavad Gita and which is further elaborated to the books like Shrimad Bhagavatam.

Interesting decoration on an Electric pole

Hi Guys, Came across this intresting decoration on an electric pole. Obviously, done by resident of the house behind. Bit of creativity and a nice hobby. Someone once said that alwasys leave this world a better place, try to make things better or atleast leave them as they were. Which meant for things like the nature, earth, water, air etc. Anyway, this is a welcome sign while going for a walk in my suburb. Atleast someone cares 😊. An unusual sight but definitly gives an air of positivity.

Amazing World of Crystals

When I was a small child, I had this hobby of collecting stones from a rivers sand bed. I used to be attracted to these unique stones, which would be anything like black, glossy, transparent, yellow, red, brown and multicolored. That was one of my 100 plus hobbies. Anyway, then I grew up and stopped looking along the sand dunes and riverbeds but, they still would make to stop even today. Even when I go for walks along beaches here in Melbourne, I invariably end up picking up and collecting something like Stones, shells etc. It makes me amazed and attracted to look at these, who had an amazing history dating back to thousand or even millions of years, coming all the way from the earth’s crust.

Amethyst Crystal Towers

Tumbled Stones - small, rounded, brightly polished pieces of rocks and minerals

And, then it so happened that I visited a Crystal shop about 20kms from my home. As I stopped my car and parked along the road, turning off the google navigation on my mobile, I noticed a Big Board displaying the name - Aus Crystals. It’s a big warehouse style retail shop. As I walked past the main open shutter door, I was greeted by tall astounding Amethyst Crystal Stones which might have about 2 to 3 feet. I knew the owner of the business from a long time but never had a chance to visit his shop. He is friendly, kind personality, who took time to take me around the shop showing the different collection of crystals, while briefly explaining about them and their names etc. I learnt lot of interesting things from him on that day and ended up spending about 1.5 hours in the shop. He told me that, he is in this business from last 17 yrs or so, and currently has a collection of about 300 plus types from crystals which come from few different countries like, Brazil, India, China etc. So, I looked around for a while buying few things like, a couple of Amethyst Bracelets, some other Crystals, Couple of books about Crystals, Sage leaves used for Smudging (The ancient practice of burning dried sage for cleansing has roots in Native American tradition. Shamans burned sage over a fire to cleansing). It was a wonderful and bit overwhelming experience to see such a huge collection of Crystals at one place and I picked up the names of few important Crystals and their benefits, which are listed below.

Happy Ugadi (Gudi Padwa)

Happy Ugadi (New Year) to all my blog readers and friends out there.

Yuga - adi means the beginning of a new era and a new Hindu lunar calendar. The festival of Ugadi is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month (Lunar Calendar) in the states of Andhra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. It is believed that Lord Brahma, the creator of the Universe on this day created days, months, years and the vital elements of nature. One of the main item, that is made today is a Pickle. The six tastes of this Pickle are sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and spicy and the basic ingredients that go into this Pickle are Cane sugar, Neem flower buds, mango, tamarind, chilli and salt. These ingredients reflect the six aspects or emotions of life like Happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust. Thus, the significance of these tastes in Ugadi Pickle is that Life is a mixture of all these situations, emotions and one has to learn to live with these with a Spirit of equanimity and steadiness. The Ugadi Pickle my wife made this morning had all but one ingredient missing. That is the Neem flower buds (bitter taste) which I would have found by flying to Queensland or something but, incidentally I happened to buy a Bottle of Neem Juice last night at an Indian grocery store. Just mixed a spoon of that Juice and that made everything perfect.

Thank God today for all yours blessings

A rich man looked through his window and saw a poor man picking something from his dustbin ... He said, Thank GOD, I'm not poor.

The poor man looked around and saw a crazy man misbehaving on the street ... He said, Thank GOD, I'm not mad.

The mad man looked ahead and saw an ambulance carrying a patient ... He said, Thank GOD am not sick.

Then a sick person in hospital saw a trolley taking a dead body to the mortuary ... He said, Thank GOD, I'm not dead.

Only a dead person cannot thank God.

Why don't you thank GOD today for all your blessings and for the gift of life ... for another beautiful day.

Surya Namaskar - Salutations to the Sun

One evening, as I was walking along the beach at St Kilda, Melbourne and I was captivated by a lady doing Sun Salutations very gracefully. I didn’t want to embarrass or disturb her privacy by staring at her but kept walking and watching. It was a perfect rhythm and control of body and mind. I also do Sun Salutations, sometimes at home but not so perfect and natural and I was impressed. She must be a yoga teacher or some serious Yoga student. Anyway, this made me think a bit these ancient yoga postures and the benefits a Sun Salutation or a Surya Namaskar gives to the practitioner. Traditionally, Sun salutations are performed in the morning during the Sunrise but, hey with our busy and hectic lifestyle, doing it sometime is better than not doing at all. Apart from normal physical and muscular strength, body co-ordination Sun Salutations provides immense benefits by activating the major chakras and the associated Endocrine glands and thus generating the important hormones useful for a health body and mind. In Hindu tradition Sun is worshipped as a visible Deva or God. He is called as Surya Narayana. In Bhagavad Gita, Krishna mentions the name of Sun God as Vivisvan. Chapter Four, Verse 1 Krishna says

“Sri-bhagavnn uvaca:-

imam vivasvate yogam

proktavan aham avyayam

vivasvan manave praha

manur ikvakave bravit

The Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa, said: I instructed this imperishable science of yoga to the sun-god, Vivasvan, and Vivasvan instructed it to Manu, the father of mankind, and Manu in turn instructed it to Ikvaku”.

So, it is not unusual in India worship Sun God. When Sun is rising, people offer oblations with water to Sun God, even though many may not do Surya Namaskars, they at least close their eyes for few seconds, fold their hands in reverence.

Depending on the Yoga school you visit and the system they are following, the asanas or the poses are called differently but, basically there are 12 poses as below,

Prayer Pose (Pranamasana)

Upward Salute (Hastauttanasana)

Standing Forward Bend (Hasta Padasana)

Low Lunge (Ashwa Sanchalanasana)

Plank (Phalakasana)

Knees-Chest-Chin (Ashtanga Namaskara)

Cobra (Bhujangasana)

Downward Facing Dog (Adho mukha śvānāsana)

Low Lunge (Ashwa Sanchalanasana)

Standing Forward Bend (Hasta Padasana)

Upward Sslute (Hastauttanasana)

Prayer Pose (Pranamasana)

And, each set of Sun Salutation starts and ends with Pranam Mudra (gesture) of joining the hands.

Here is a nice and easy picture which basically shows the Asana or the pose, breathing which is very important (inhale/Exhale) and the name of the major Chakra that is strengthened by the asana.

Gopastami Festival

Today, (yesterday in India) is Gopastami, a festival that is dedicated to Lord Krishna and cows. This was the day when Nanda Maharaja seeing that Krishna had become sufficiently grown up, gave him the responsibility of taking care of the cows. A big festival and a ceremony was arranged by Nanda Maharaj father of Lord Krishna, which included cleaning, decorating and worshipping of Cows and their calves. That’s why, today is also celebrated as a Go Puja day, where even today, the cows are beautifully decorated and worshipped. So, this was the day Krishna and his cowherd friends are looking forward to. Go to the forests of Vrindavan and Govardhan Mountain by themselves without any adult supervision. They are all thinking of all the fun they can have playing in the forest while looking after the cows. And, this is the day when Srimati Radharani is dressed as a cowherd boy.

Here is an interesting pastime of why Radha Rani is dressed as a cowherd boy. While, Krishna and his friends are going to the forest with cows, Radha Rani also wanted to join the fun. And, those days as girls are not allowed to go for grazing the cows, she joined the group of cowherd boys incognito. She requested and borrow a Gopa - Cowherd boy dress from Subala, a friend of Krishna and along with her girlfriends similarly disguised as boys joined the group of cowherd boys.

The above photo of Srimari Radha Rani is from ISKCON - Vrindavan and you can see her dressed as a Cowherd boy. Also, today is the only special day on which the Lotus feet of Radha Rani are not covered and can be seen.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

In this Mantra, Krishna and Rama are the names of Lord and Hare refers to Radha Rani. The mantra is most commonly translated as, "O Lord, O Energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your service."

Wishing you all a Happy Gopastami.
